The Key Advantages of Hidden Fasteners

The Key Advantages of Hidden Fasteners

Whatever the age of your decking, annual deck maintenance is critical in preserving your deck for as long as possible.

Sadly, the more you procrastinate and put-off deck maintenance, the shorter the lifespan of your deck. Here’s what you should do first; check the ledger area, studying the joists and cleaning out any gunk. The next inspection is one that’s often overlooked, and that’s the fastenings of your deck boards.

Traditionally, deck boards were secured in place using two exposed deck screws. However, this method has become outdated, as screws and nails damage deck boards. A more recent implementation is the use of hidden fasteners

Hidden deck clips, otherwise called hidden deck board fasteners, are an alternative means of holding deck boards in place. These tiny fixtures are capable of providing strength and sturdiness to the entire deck structure. Hidden fasteners have become very well respected due to the range of benefits they provide:

Climate

Hidden fasteners are an excellent choice for regions that experience harsh weather. In comparison to traditional screws and nails, hidden clips are much less likely to be eroded and damaged by the elements. While screws offer a quick, temporary solution, over time they degrade and cause damage to the boards.

Another crucial factor is that natural materials such as wood expand and contract with changes in the weather. Screws and nails hold wooden boards rigidly in place, and do not allow for the natural movement of wood. As a result, the areas of wood that surround the screws tend to degrade very quickly, compromising the structural integrity of the deck and reducing its appearance.

Hidden deck board fasteners, on the other hand, are attached to the sides of decking boards, eliminating any chance of moisture seeping through gaps and holes. Also, due to their positioning, decking clips allow for the expansion and contraction of wood, without any restriction.

Hazards

Another drawback of using traditional screws and nails is the possibility of injuring an unsuspecting child, or  pet. A protruding screw could easily puncture the skin, and your deck should be a safe family space where everyone can gather without the threat of injury. Hidden deck clips are far safer as they aren’t sharp and they remain tucked-away.

Aesthetics

We’ve established that hidden deck clips perform better than conventional fastening systems, but they also look much better too. Exposed screws draw the eye away from the beauty of natural wood, decreasing your deck’s overall appearance.

Hidden fasteners do a great job of holding decking together, whilst remaining unseen. They are also incredibly easy to install, requiring much less effort than screws or nails.
